As mentioned, runes from fossils will recquire mercury to activate instead of resources. The following chart shows the amount of mercury needed for each type of rune:

 

Grey Runes: Mercury needed 30pcs.

Green Runes: Mercury Needed 120pcs

Blue Runes: Mercury Needed 330pcs

Violet Runes : Mercury Needed 930pcs

Red Runes: Mercury Needed 2700pcs

 

Already from the this page you can see the amount of mercury dropped by creatures according to the reputation of the hunter. Note that these runes which are activated by mercury are transferable/tradable, but there are some runes that can be opened by resources (like its now) and they cannot the transfered.

 

Now, as one can see, obtaining mercury is very expensive and time consuming  act. To relieve the stress of the players on waiting for instance bosses to respawn, the developers have introduced a new reputation, called Fishers of Fortune.
